Vibrant small town in the heart of the San Francisco Peninsula.
Thirty minutes south of San Francisco sits the lively small town of Burlingame. With its combination of excellent schools, energetic and charming downtown, and close-knit community, residents are afforded an idyllic, upscale lifestyle in one of the peninsula's best locations.
Long a vacation outpost for San Francisco’s elite, present-day Burlingame has developed into a thriving community with access to many of the peninsula's top employers and attractions. Indeed, location is one of the town's greatest draws. San Francisco is 20 miles to the north, Silicon Valley is 20 miles to the south, and San Francisco International Airport is a scant 10-minute drive away.
Even with its proximity to major population centers, Burlingame remains a collection of quiet, community-focused neighborhoods. High-end housing abounds with offerings that include three to five-bedroom homes fetching anywhere between $1.5 million and $5.5 million depending on location and personal tastes.
Nicknamed the "City of Trees," Burlingame has broad appeal for all kinds of lifestyles. Great schools, plenty of outdoor space, and easy access to both San Francisco and Silicon Valley make this an ideal spot for young or growing families to establish roots. Although, the pastoral, suburban vibe draws just as many empty nesters who appreciate the nearby downtown, abundance of restaurants, and relaxed, laid-back lifestyle.
Even better for folks seeking a rustic, outdoorsy way of life, Burlingame is the ideal home base for those who want easy access to the best of the Bay Area's natural riches. Consider that Half Moon Bay, Mavericks Beach, Pacifica Beach, and Mori Point are all less than an hour away.
Burlingame features two primary retail centers. The first is along Broadway between El Camino Real and California Drive. Some of the region's best dining can be found here, including the highly-touted Mivan Mediterranean Cuisine, the storefront steakhouse Broadway Prime, and Italian-styled hangout Caffe Il Piccolo.
The showstopper, however, is Downtown Burlingame. Stretching along Burlingame Avenue, the main thoroughfare anchors a multi-block district of upscale shopping and dining. Charming in every sense, Downtown Burlingame features wide sidewalks, pristine landscaping, and patio cafés. The quaint storefronts—a mix of old, new, and carefully-restored—welcome residents and visitors alike.
Downtown has the perfect mix of big-name retailers and smaller, local boutiques. Dining highlights include the upscale Italian Stella Alpina Osteria. Park & Howard Bistro specializes in exquisite California cuisine. Caffe Central is the choice spot for grabbing a cup of joe then kicking back with it on the sidewalk patio.
Owing to its small-town, village vibe, activities and events in Burlingame are often intimate, cozy affairs. The community-owed Burlingame Fresh Market in downtown exemplifies this approach with its commitment to local farmers and merchants.
The city also sponsors Music in the Park every Sunday in July in Washington Park. Just a short walk from downtown, Burlingame Library represents one of the best such facilities anywhere in the Bay Area.
For a grander experience, the Kohl Mansion, listed on the National Historic Register of Historic Places, is a century-old mansion overlooking the San Francisco Bay. With distinctive Tudor architecture and gardens covering 63 acres, the mansion plays host to many public and private events throughout the year.
Burlingame is home to several excellent schools. Top educational opportunities include:
